Lets Talk about Flags
Ok I was browsing facebook today and found out that a student at the University of Maine at Farmington made a public art project that put about 5 large American Flags on the floor of a hallway. This is extremely wrong in so many moral ways by any american towards those who fought to protect what that piece of cloth represents. After doing some research I found to Supreme Court Rulings on this topic. First one from the case Halter v. Nebraska (1907):
The First U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on Flag Desecration (1907): Most early flag desecration statutes prohibited marking or otherwise defacing a flag design, using the flag in commercial advertising, and showing “contempt” for flag in any way–by publicly burning, trampling on it, spitting on it, or otherwise showing a lack of respect for it. In Halter v. Nebraska (1907), the U.S. Supreme Court upheld these statutes as constitutional.
This same topic came back up again in 1968 where a Federal Law was passed that states the following:
Federal Flag Desecration Law (1968): In 1968, Congress passed the Federal Flag Desecration Law in response to a Central Park event in which peace activists burned American flags in protest against the Vietnam War. The law banned any display of “contempt” directed against the flag, but did not address the other issues dealt with by state flag desecration laws
Disgrace of The American Flag at UMF
Ok, The Dean and board members, WHO are you to lecture a man you fought for your rights so you can have that job that is completely useless. If anything you should be getting down and kissing that mans feet and saying thank you and not yelling at him about what the American Flag stands for. You also shouldn’t be mocking that man.
You claim this is art, How is this art? This isn’t art also how you can that veterans and soldiers aren’t fighting for the flag? We are fighting for ideals behind the flag, which is fight for the symbol of the American flag and the ideology behind it. With out our founding fathers who fought for these rights which this flag represents to Americans. Some of us have this in deepest beliefs. Most veterans stand on this idea “A man with a history of duty and patriotism. Not his lines, but his cores beliefs. Some people don’t know what to do when their belief system collapses.” The Veterans don’t just believe on the outside what they fought for is just a idea that is was in still upon them from some book. See what they are fighting for they believe in to the deepest core of them. When they are disrespected in the ways that they were at the University of Maine at Farmington was not right nor will it ever be right.
The artist of the display claims to be consertive republican, How is this so? No republican would every demoralize or disgrace the same country and beliefs of their countrymen. Specially of those who fought for the rights and ideas to give them the right to do so. As a fellow mainer, serviceman and republican I think this artist should make a public applogoly to all the serviceman and veterans of maine. The Dean and person that was mocking the Veteran at the display should also make a public apploylogy.
What we do isn’t just a ideology but a core belief. So please respect the veterans and servicemembers. When you see one stop and say thanks you protecting me from the evils of terrorism and evils of wars. Thanks for fighting for my rights to say what I want and giving my the ability of to not have someone telling what and where I can go and what I can go.
THANKS SERVICEMEMBERS for serving this country!

I believe so strongly that the American flag should be treated with respect and dignity and pride that it embarrasses me that another American would do such a thing.
